Magness isn't sure there is one, but speculates that over time he could gather useful data on something like what post-workout practices (jogging, ice bath, massage, etc.) most quickly return central nervous system functioning to a pre-workout state. Athletes in Alberto Salazar's Nike Oregon Project are experimenting with monitoring what's known as the galvanic skin response (GSR) to assess their readiness for and recovery from hard workouts, according to a blog post by the group's assistant coach, Steve Magness.Īs Magness puts it, GSR "is essentially a way to look at sympathetic nervous system response." (Interestingly, it's used as part of lie-detector tests.) Magness has had his guinea pigs (including himself) wear a watch-like device to measure GSR before and after workouts to read how aroused the person's central nervous system is. ![]()
